North Korean state media earlier this week reported on the successful flight-testing of “new type long-range cruise missiles.” An unknown number of these missiles were tested on Sept. 11 and 12, marking the first major missile tests in the country since March 2021.

The testing of these cruise missiles is not a surprise, however. North Korea had featured launchers for an apparent new long-range cruise missile at its Oct. 2020 and Jan. 2021 military parades. Moreover, leader Kim Jong Un, at the Eighth Party Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea earlier this year, referenced a new “intermediate-range cruise missile.”
