North Korea’s ongoing border lockdown to safeguard against COVID-19 is hitting its economy hard: The total value of DPRK-Chinese trade from January to September dropped by more than 70% compared to the same period last year, and it’s on track to get even worse.

In total, North Korea only traded about $530 million worth of goods with China from Jan. 2020 to Sept. 2020 — an exactly 73% drop year-over-year, according to a new Korean-language report from South Korea’s Korea International Trade Association (KITA). This marks a significantly steeper decline than the 57% drop in DPRK-China trade caused by international sanctions
