North Korea commemorated the 13th death anniversary of Kim Jong Il this week, as leader Kim Jong Un made his first appearance in weeks to pay respects at the mausoleum where his father lies in state.

State propaganda praised the former leader as a devoted patriot and humble servant of the people, ignoring his well-reported extravagances, and sought to build up Kim Jong Un’s own personality cult by presenting him as the rightful successor.
