North Korean cybercriminals stole over $1 billion in cryptocurrency last year despite diminishing returns from virtual heists across the world, according to a U.S. blockchain analytics firm.

Pyongyang-backed threat groups’ collective haul represents a marked decrease after they stole $1.7 billion in 2022 on the back of record-breaking heists, but still accounted for over half of the $1.7 billion worth of virtual currency stolen worldwide, Chainalysis said in a report Wednesday. The $1 billion figure also represents North Korea’s second–highest year of cryptocurrency theft after 2022.
