North Korean state media this week promoted a recent pastry expo in Pyongyang featuring flour-based foods ranging from cakes and hamburgers to turtle-shaped bread, as the leadership attempts to shift the diets of the North Korean people to adapt to ongoing food shortages.

Newspapers and television also repeatedly emphasized Kim Jong Un’s efforts to develop long-range missiles, giving nearly wall-to-wall coverage of Kim’s inspection of a missile engine test even on the day of his father’s death. The leader appeared to skip commemorative events for Kim Jong Il.
