Fewer luxuries on sale at North Korea’s Daesong Department Store, photos show
Exclusive photos show domestic products fill shelves but far fewer luxury goods on display than before the pandemic
The Daesong Department Store is one of the most well-known shops in Pyongyang and even received a high-profile visit from Kim Jong Un in April 2019, when photos revealed it was selling a range of luxury goods that likely contravene U.N. sanctions on North Korea.
Now, recent photos obtained by NK Pro of several key sections of the store show fully stocked shelves — but an absence of the scale of luxury products once clearly on display. The store prohibited photos in at least one section selling furniture, and there are no photos of the food and restaurant
