News Amid COVID-19 trade lockdown, North Korea opens borders for sugar and big tiresDec. 2020 trade data shows North Korea’s priorities during a general COVID-19-related slowdown As North Korea enters its sixth month of trade lockdowns, border restrictions appear to have opened by just a crack in order to import millions of pounds of sugar and thousands of tires from its largest trade partner, China. Data from China’s General Administration of Customs (GAC) shows that North Korea imported more than 22 million pounds of sugar, electrical energy and six types of tires used for regular cars, buses, trucks, construction vehicles and agricultural vehicles during Dec. 2020.
