North Korea reports on Yoon’s impeachment two days after National Assembly vote

Expert says relatively quick coverage likely reflects effort to get ahead of news before it spreads inside country

North Korea reported on the impeachment of South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol on Monday, denouncing him as a “ringleader of rebellion” less than two days after he was stripped of his powers for imposing martial law.

State media’s relatively rapid coverage of lawmakers’ vote to impeach Yoon on Saturday likely reflected Pyongyang’s desire to get ahead of the news, according to one expert, given its inability to completely control the flow of outside information into the country and domestic interest in the story.
