Yoon’s impeachment throws future of North Korean human rights policy into doubt

South Korean leader presented himself as ally to cause, and now activists fear reversal of his policies following ouster

President Yoon Suk-yeol’s impeachment has cast a shadow over the future of North Korean human rights policies in South Korea, placing question marks over initiatives that many activists hoped would bring renewed focus to their cause.

When Yoon took office in 2022, advocates welcomed his plans to prioritize human rights in North Korea after his progressive predecessor Moon Jae-in sidelined such issues while pursuing diplomacy with Pyongyang.
