Ox carts and smartphones: New video offers rare look at North Korean countryside

Footage captured by Russian tourist in October shows the steep challenges DPRK faces in developing rural areas

New footage of the North Korean countryside captured by a Russian tourist provides a rare glimpse into life beyond the relative affluence of Pyongyang, showing that ox-drawn carts often outnumber vehicles and unpaved roads still dominate the landscape.

The video published on the YouTube channel PoletMe Aviation was recorded in October from a tourist bus traveling along the DPRK’s east coast, starting from Mount Chilbo and traveling some 30 miles north to an airport in Orang, near the city of Chongjin.
