Russia pledges support to North Korea in case of conflict on the peninsula

Kremlin officials cited military pact signed by Putin and Kim when asked about escalating tension in the region

Russia will come to North Korea’s aid should conflict break out on the Korean Peninsula, Moscow officials have said, citing the two countries' new military pact. But one expert questioned the Kremlin’s commitment to Pyongyang amid escalating tensions.

When asked by reporters if Russia would get involved in a conflict on the peninsula, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Moscow and Pyongyang will engage in “strategic deep cooperation in all areas, including ensuring security,” citing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership treaty signed in June.
