On high alert: Why North Korean threats over ROK drones likely aim to deescalate

DPRK has put troops on standby many times under Kim Jong Un, usually avoiding conflict if Seoul respects its red lines

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula hit a dangerous new high over the weekend after North Korea claimed a South Korean drone scattered anti-regime leaflets over Pyongyang. The DPRK has since ordered border units “to get fully ready to open fire,” issuing multiple threats of military retaliation should another drone enter its airspace.

The ROK military has reportedly upgraded its own troops’ alert level and ordered strengthened surveillance in response to the North Korean threats, raising fears of escalation in a hair-trigger security situation.
