South Korean vice minister briefs US counterpart on new unification policy

Kim Hong-kyun outlines plans to ‘extend freedom’ to North Korea, seeking Washington’s support

South Korea’s vice foreign minister briefed his U.S. counterpart on Seoul’s new unification doctrine to “extend freedom” to North Korea on Tuesday, seeking support for a policy that experts say endorses unification by absorption.

Kim Hong-kyun met with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell in Washington and outlined key elements of the Yoon administration’s “August 15 Unification Doctrine,” according to Seoul’s foreign ministry.
