Seoul spotlights North Korean human rights abuses as UN Security Council chair

ROK envoy says council will hold meeting on DPRK human rights during monthlong presidency, linking issue to WMD program

South Korea will use its monthlong term as president of the U.N. Security Council (UNSC) to spotlight North Korea’s human rights abuses and military escalations, Seoul’s ambassador to the U.N. said Monday, as the ROK took charge of the council for the first time in a decade.

During a press conference outlining South Korea’s agenda as UNSC president, Ambassador Hwang Joon-kook said the council will hold an open meeting in mid-June on the DPRK’s human rights situation.
