Shortly after North Korea launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) last Thursday, the South Korean military responded with its own show of force, firing a wide range of weaponry from around the East Sea. The next day, as the DPRK boasted of testing what it questionably labeled a new missile, Seoul continued to showcase its own military prowess by parading fully armed fighter jets.

The back and forth between the two sides has been the most visible manifestation yet of heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula. South Korean President Moon Jae-in “strongly condemned” the North’s latest launch — the first time it has fired an ICBM in more than four years — and stated that Kim Jong Un had violated his self-proclaimed moratorium on long-range missile and nuclear testing.
