North Korea seeks ‘close’ foreign cooperation on women’s rights, health

Rare expression of interest amid pandemic appears in foreign ministry screed on ‘plight’ of women in Western countries

North Korea seeks “close” cooperation with the international community over women’s rights and health, the country’s foreign ministry said in a statement Tuesday, a rare expression of interest in humanitarian collaboration during the pandemic.

The vague remarks appear in a screed criticizing the “plight” of women in Western countries and follow a freeze in most forms of international cooperation since Jan. 2020, when the DPRK largely closed its borders to protect itself against COVID-19.
