Political motivations pushed North Korean human rights violations to the side in 2020, the January report by the U.N. Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) stated.

According to the report, “other political priorities with respect to the Korean Peninsula” have resulted in a “decreased emphasis” on human rights in North Korea. While there were partially successful lawsuits in South Korea and the United States against the North Korean government in 2020, the country’s lack of cooperation made securing information and evidence challenging, the report added.
