US bans citizens from traveling to North Korea for a fourth consecutive year

The State Department first instituted the travel ban in 2017 in response to the death of U.S. tourist Otto Warmbier

The U.S. Department of State renewed a ban on American citizens traveling to North Korea, extending the measure for its fourth year in a row, according to a notice posted to the Federal Register on Aug. 28.

The measure was first made in Sept. 2017 in response to the North’s detention of American tourist Otto Warmbier, who was eventually returned to the U.S. in a comatose state before dying just days later, in June 2017. He was 22.
