Calls for a united homeland have become gradually quieter since liberation from Japanese colonial rule in 1945

Aug. 15 marks South Korea’s 75th Liberation Day — a national holiday that commemorates the peninsula’s freedom from Japanese colonial rule.

Last year’s Liberation Day came with big promises: South Korean President Moon Jae-in pledged to work towards reunification by 2045, a century after the peninsula’s original liberation.
