Korean unification costs would exceed $2.7 trillion: Researcher

Academic says unified Korea would likely divide into high-tech South, 'mega-farm' North

SEOUL — A researcher estimates that the costs of Korean unification would be greater than those borne by Germany, which he placed at about 2.5 trillion euros ($2.7 trillion) since their unification a quarter-century ago.

Researchers gathered Friday at the conference entitled “Prospects on Korean Reunification and Its Global Economic Effects” at the Westin Chosun Seoul, exchanging opinions on a variety of topics including the costs of Kaorean unification.
