The United Nations Security Council met on Wednesday to discuss the North Korean rocket launch, with a brief statement saying they would urgently consider “an appropriate response.” The UNSC said that the launch had violated Security Council Resolutions 1714 and 1874, which forbid the North from conducting launches using ballistic-missile technology among other things.

Moroccan UN Ambassador Mohammed Loulichki, who is president of the UNSC this month, said that “Members of the Security Council will continue consultations on an appropriate response,” but did not give an indication of what that might be. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, released a statement saying that the launch was “regrettable” especially “because it defies the unified and strong call from the international community [not to go ahead].” In addition, he said that he was “concerned about the negative consequences that this provocative act may have on peace and stability in the region.”
