A failed attempt to foment revolution exemplified the intensity of Cold War struggle, and made a 9-year-old into a hero

Editor’s note: This is the first in a two-part series on the North Korean killing of Lee Seung-bok and the battle over his memory in South Korea.

A few decades ago, it would have been impossible to find a South Korean who didn’t know the name Lee Seung-bok, a young boy killed by North Korean invaders during a bungled attempt to foment revolution.

But nowadays, many younger South Koreans have never even heard of the boy once held up as the embodiment of anti-communist resistance and an example for all generations to emulate.
