North Korea pledges to improve internet freedom but rejects anti-torture treaty

DPRK spurns most UN recommendations to improve human rights in periodic review, likely seeking to dodge scrutiny

North Korea has rejected a majority of recommendations by U.N. member states to improve its human rights, most notably spurning calls to ratify a convention against torture

But Pyongyang also accepted 143 of 294 suggestions in its response to the U.N.’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of the country, including a recommendation to increase access to the internet.
