UN envoy warns funding cuts will impair work of North Korean human rights NGOs

Elizabeth Salmon calls for governments and private donors to provide support after US freezes billions in foreign aid

The U.N. special envoy for North Korean human rights has voiced concern that the funding crisis hitting nongovernmental organizations will negatively impact efforts to address abuses in the country, after the Trump administration froze billions in foreign aid.

“In the past few weeks, several human rights civil society organizations based in the Republic of Korea expressed a serious challenge in continuing their work on human rights in the DPRK due to sudden suspension or cut of funding,” special rapporteur Elizabeth Salmon said in a statement on Wednesday.
