North Korean hackers responsible for third of all virtual funds stolen last year

New report says DPRK actors stole almost $800M in crypto but warns estimate likely to increase as new data emerges

North Korean cybercriminals stole almost $800 million in cryptocurrency in 2024, accounting for more than a third of all stolen virtual funds worldwide last year, according to a U.S. blockchain intelligence firm.

The threat posed by DPRK actors was particularly evident in “high-impact operations” as their heists were nearly five times larger than other actors’ attacks on average, TRM Labs said in its 2025 Crypto Crime Report released on Monday.
