Mercury dips as low as -13 F in North Korea, adding to citizens’ hardships

State media warns of frigid temperatures and strong winds in country where most rely on firewood and coal to stay warm

North Korea warned citizens to brace for frigid temperatures and strong winds on Thursday and Friday, as extreme conditions add to the hardships of millions who rely on poor heating.

The party daily Rodong Sinmun on Thursday reported that temperatures could plummet to as low as -13 F (-25 C) in Ryanggang Province and other northern regions, while the mercury will dip to 3.2 F (-16 C) in Pyongyang.
