Handwritten notes tell the story of a North Korean soldier killed in Russia

27-year-old sends birthday wishes, confesses ‘sins’ and more in letters and diary released by Ukraine

Handwritten documents are all that’s left to tell the story of a North Korean soldier killed in action last month, fighting a war thousands of miles from his homeland.

In one letter, the soldier wishes his best friend a happy birthday and strong health while they both fight in Russia. In a notebook, he praises Kim Jong Un for offering him a fresh start after he “betrayed” the party’s love, while detailing tactics for countering enemy drones.
