Martial law crisis jeopardizes ROK cooperation with Ukraine against North Korea

Hopes for South Korean arms shipments to counter DPRK troops in Russia evaporate as Yoon faces impeachment

The fallout from South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol’s imposition of martial law has cast uncertainty over Ukraine’s efforts to secure military aid from Seoul, complicating joint efforts to deter North Korean troop deployments in support of Russia’s invasion.

The political crisis came just days after Ukraine’s defense chief visited the country and met with Yoon. Both sides remained tightlipped about Rustem Umerov’s requests during the Nov. 27 meeting, but the South Korean president stressed their focus on developing “practical countermeasures” against risks from DPRK troops.
