Trump victory sets off renewed calls in ROK to go nuclear to counter North Korea

Conservative politicians say South Korea can no longer depend on US for defense following election of alliance skeptic

South Korea must reconsider its stance on not developing nuclear weapons in response to Donald Trump’s election victory, top conservative politicians asserted on Thursday, arguing that Seoul can no longer depend on Washington to help defend against North Korean threats.

"While the ROK-U.S. alliance remains crucial under a second Trump administration, it has become ever more clear that we can no longer entrust our diplomatic and security interests to American consideration alone," Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon of the People Power Party (PPP) wrote on Facebook, emphasizing the need to pursue nuclear latency.
