North Korea forgoes celebrations for 75th anniversary of ties with China

Lack of fanfare beyond leaders’ exchange of letters underscores bilateral relationship has reached a nadir, expert says

North Korea marked the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties with China on Sunday without hosting any major celebrations, in a sign that Pyongyang’s relationship with its biggest economic benefactor has sunk to a nadir as it focuses on military cooperation with Russia.

Both DPRK and Chinese state media had not reported on any events to celebrate the anniversary as of Monday afternoon, despite previously declaring 2024 the “year of China-DPRK friendship.”
