Why North Korea’s first girl group vanished without a curtain call

Moranbong Band injected sex appeal to DPRK pop but hasn’t been seen in years, likely due to conservative propaganda turn

Four members of North Korea’s Moranbong Band took to the stage on New Year’s Eve, wearing matching military-style overcoats with epaulets and ushanka fur hats emblazoned with a star, and belted out an upbeat pop number about leader Kim Jong Un to ring in 2020.

And while few if any knew it at the time, that concert now appears to have been the last time fans would get to see the DPRK’s first girl group perform.
