Russian military plane makes rare flight to North Korea from St. Petersburg

Command and control aircraft is one of just two in Moscow’s fleet and carried defense minister earlier this year

A Russian military command and control aircraft flew directly to North Korea from St. Petersburg on Friday, aviation data shows, a rare flight route that one expert said suggests the visit is tied to Vladimir Putin’s recent activities in the city.

The Russian Air Force Tu-214PU-SBUS, tail number RA-64530, departed from St. Petersburg around 12:30 a.m. KST and touched down in Pyongyang around 9:30 a.m. on Friday, according to the Flightradar24 aviation tracking service.
