A defense hawk who has long backed engagement with North Korea is set to take office as Japan’s new leader, potentially paving the way for a shift in Tokyo’s approach to ties with its nuclear neighbor.

The ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) elected former defense minister Shigeru Ishiba as its new leader on Friday, setting him up to succeed outgoing Prime Minister Fumio Kishida next week.
