North Korean military spy satellite launch ends in failure after rocket explodes

DPRK confirms mid-air explosion following late-night launch from main spaceport, blaming new engine design

North Korea launched a military spy satellite from its main spaceport on Monday evening but failed to put the satellite into orbit after the carrier rocket exploded, DPRK state media confirmed.

Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) announced in a press release that an apparent military reconnaissance satellite took off on a space launch vehicle around 10:44 p.m. KST from Sohae Satellite Launching Station on North Korea’s west coast.
