North Korea develops new NATO-caliber assault rifle in arms modernization push

Expert uncovers DPRK’s plans to introduce rifle based on Russian AK after unblurring photo published in state media

North Korea has unintentionally revealed plans to introduce a new assault rifle that could fire NATO-caliber rounds, an expert has found, in line with the DPRK military’s trend of equipping soldiers with more Western-style arms.

In coverage of Kim Jong Un’s recent visit to a sniper rifle factory, state media carried a photo of the leader pointing at a poster with details about the new assault rifle, while blurring the gun itself and other information.
