North Korea calls ROK by official name in broadcast on inter-Korean soccer match

Expert says shift from referring to South team as ‘puppets’ reflects DPRK’s new policy viewing ROK as separate country

North Korean state television aired a recent inter-Korean women’s soccer match over the weekend, notably referring to the South by its official name the Republic of Korea amid a shakeup in the DPRK’s policy toward its southern neighbor.

The DPRK under-20 women’s team defeated South Korea by the score of 3-0 in the semifinal match of the  2024 AFC U-20 Women's Soccer Asian Cup on March 13, and the Korean Central Television (KCTV) broadcast the game on Sunday, referring to the teams as Joson (조선) and Republic of Korea (한국), respectively.
