North Korean envoy tells UN that Korean Peninsula on brink of nuclear war

Kim Song blames US but also calls for climate change action, in likely effort to position itself as engaged member state

North Korea’s ambassador to the U.N. issued a stark warning that the Korean Peninsula has reached a “hair-trigger situation with imminent danger of nuclear war breakout,” delivering a speech at the 78th U.N. General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.

Kim Song also slammed recent U.S.-ROK military drills, while calling the allies’ efforts to bolster trilateral ties with Japan an attempt to create an “Asian version of NATO” that introduces a “‘new cold war’ structure to Northeast Asia.”
