The missile that North Korea fired across the inter-Korean maritime border last week and into waters off the ROK coast was an SA-5 surface-to-air missile, similar to projectiles Russia is using in its war against Ukraine, Seoul announced Wednesday.
The defense ministry made its assessment based on debris from the missile that the navy recovered on Sunday, salvaging three pieces approximately 10 feet (3 meters) in length and 6 feet (2 meters) wide. North Korea fired the SA-5 south of the Northern Limit Line (NLL) days earlier, with the missile splashing down in waters 35 miles east of the city of Sokcho and prompting air raid alerts on Ulleung Island.
