Tens of thousands of North Koreans gathered in the streets of Pyongyang despite a nationwide COVID-19 lockdown to participate in a state funeral for a former military official on Sunday, according to state media.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and top officials also attended the funeral for retired Korean People’s Army (KPA) Marshal Hyon Chol Hae, the Rodong Sinmun reported on Monday. 

Kim and dozens of KPA honor guardsmen did not appear to wear masks even as the country battles a COVID-19 outbreak that has officially claimed 68 lives and led to nearly 3 million suspected cases nationwide.
