US outlines increased missile defenses as North Korean threats ramp up

Better defense systems could motivate enemies to build up 'more sophisticated offensive weapons,' experts say

Top U.S. defense officials have laid out plans to consolidate defense systems against missile threats coming from adversaries such as North Korea, China, Russia and Iran.

Lieutenant General Daniel L. Karbler, commander of U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command, told a U.S. Senate subcommittee on Wednesday that the Pentagon will introduce better interceptors and bolster its missile defense posture to respond to challenges including North Korea’s continued development of intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBMs) and submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs).
