Seoul and Washington agree to terminate ‘working group’ on North Korea affairs

The Trump-era institution, designed to help facilitate sanctions exemptions, was derided by many as ineffective

South Korea and the U.S. will disband the “working group” created to address North Korea issues during the previous Trump administration, Seoul’s foreign ministry said on Tuesday.

The U.S.-ROK Working Group was created in Nov. 2018 to more easily coordinate on North Korea’s denuclearization and implement sanctions against Pyongyang. The decision to disband the group was made on Monday during a bilateral meeting between Sung Kim, the U.S.’ North Korea policy envoy, and his South Korean counterpart, according to Seoul’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) on Tuesday.
