US spy chief unlikely in contact with North Korea during DMZ visit: Experts

Purpose of unannounced visit by U.S. Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines not yet clear

The U.S.’ top intelligence official visited the demilitarized zone (DMZ) separating the two Koreas on Thursday, but experts say it’s unlikely the trip was anything more than a standard orientation.

An NK News source confirmed that Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines toured the DMZ after arriving in South Korea on Wednesday. While the reason for Haines’ visit to the DMZ is unclear, experts suspect it’s not to liaise with North Korean officials.
