The vaccines were apparently supposed to come from pharmaceutical manufacturer Serum Institute of India as part of the global COVAX initiative. Close to two million COVID-19 vaccines destined for North Korea have been delayed indefinitely, says an international organization leading vaccination efforts.

Geneva-based Gavi told NK News that North Korea’s lack of “technical preparedness” and a “global supply shortage” have pushed back a shipment of 1.7 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to North Korea.

The vaccines were apparently supposed to come from pharmaceutical manufacturer Serum Institute of India as part of the global COVAX initiative. But last month, a World Health Organization official said that shipments for many countries, including North Korea, would be delayed.
