North Korea tells its young leaders to ‘ruthlessly crush’ unruly teen behavior

The ruling party’s Kimilsungist-Kimjongilist Youth League holds its first major meeting in five years this week

North Korea said it’s facing a “problem” of unruly, disaffected teenagers, with a top official calling for youth-focused organizations to “ruthlessly crush even the slightest hint” of behavior that goes against the state-sanctioned socialist lifestyle.

On Thursday, North Korean state media reported that the ruling party’s Kimilsungist-Kimjongilist Youth League convened Tuesday in the capital for its first major meeting since 2016. At the meeting, Youth League Central Committee Chairman Pak Chol Min reportedly criticized the organization for failing to combat “antisocialist and non-socialist phenomena among teenagers.”
