North Korea’s Olympic Committee held a meeting this week to discuss its plan for 2021, state media reported on Friday, raising questions about whether Pyongyang is open to a round of sports diplomacy at the Tokyo Olympics in July.
According to North Korea’s state-run Rodong Sinmun, the Olympic committee met on Thursday and stressed the need to win more medals over the next five years. Olympic Committee Chairman Kim Il Guk, also the DPRK’s minister of sports, reportedly relayed that Kim Jong Un wants to make North Korea an “advanced country” in the world of athletics.
