A North Korean man crossed the inter-Korean border wearing swimming flippers and a diving suit, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said on Wednesday.
The man, who the JCS said is believed to have intentionally defected, was caught by the South Korean military on Tuesday morning after swimming southward in the East Sea. According to the JCS, the man likely emerged from the ocean near the Goseong Unification Observatory Tower in Gangwon province. The South Korean military believes that he then went under barbed wire and passed through a damaged drain pipe.
