The U.S. Department of Justice charged three North Korean hackers for conspiring to steal more than $1.3 billion in cryptocurrency and cash from companies and financial institutions, according to a government indictment notice released on Wednesday. A Canadian man has also pleaded guilty to helping the hackers launder money.
The Justice Department said the three North Korean hackers took part “in a wide-ranging criminal conspiracy to conduct a series of destructive cyberattacks” to steal cash and cryptocurrency from various institutions, including cryptocurrency companies in Slovenia, Indonesia and the United States. The indictment notice also accused North Korean hackers of creating malicious cryptocurrency applications and developing a fraudulent blockchain platform.
