North Korean defector-author Jang Jin-sung accused of rape and sexual assault

Alleged victim files criminal complaint, author of “Dear Leader” memoir and second alleged perpetrator claim innocence

A female North Korean defector filed a criminal rape and sexual assault complaint against prominent defector-author Jang Jin-sung, who wrote a 2014 memoir about his work as a propaganda writer for the DPRK government.

In the criminal complaint filed to the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency on Friday, North Korean defector Seung Sul-hyang accused Jang of raping her four times throughout 2016 and blackmailing her using a nonconsensual photo of her naked body, her lawyers announced at a press conference. Earlier this week, Seung went public with these allegations in an interview with South Korean broadcaster MBC.
