Roughly one year after North Korea closed its borders to protect itself from the global COVID-19 pandemic, the country once again claims to have zero confirmed cases of the virus as of Jan. 21.
A new report from the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that surveillance for the COVID-19 is "ongoing" in North Korea and that samples from the country are being tested across 15 laboratories. North Korea periodically reports novel coronavirus-related statistics to WHO, but the latest update once again does not include total testing numbers or the total number of people in quarantine — information that once regularly appeared in past reports.
