Biden administration taps diplomat who helped with historic North Korea summit

Sung Kim named the acting assistant secretary of state for the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs

A top U.S. negotiator who has led working-level talks with North Korea will help the State Department transition under President Joe Biden, NK News has confirmed.

Sung Kim, who helped organize the 2018 Singapore Summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, will be serving as the acting assistant secretary of state for the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs. Kim also led Washington's working-level talks in Pyongyang in July 2018 alongside former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo before becoming the ambassador to Indonesia in Oct. 2020.
